These include but are not limited to improvements in: muscle strength and endurance, total body endurance, joint flexibility, balance, bed mobility, walking and the efficiency of movements.
Can neurophysiotherapy help me?
There are several factors that are considered with regard to potential improvements when a client is assessed. While everyone’s needs are different, it is rare that an individual with a neurological impairment will present without any areas that can be improved by physiotherapy. Individuals will be encouraged to define their treatment goals and the potential to achieve these goals and progress is discussed on an individual basis between the treating physiotherapist and the patient.
How long and how often will I need to attend neurophysiotherapy treatment?
The length of time a person attends physiotherapy depends on the individual goals and the person’s potential for change. Improvements are assessed on a regular basis by many different methods. Once an individual’s goals are met, or their progress stabilizes, treatment will be decreased and then reviewed on a periodic basis to ensure the individual is not deteriorating in their functional ability.
The frequency of treatment is also dependent on each individual’s needs and is determined in discussion with the client. The following is considered when deciding the number of sessions required per week: the client’s schedule outside of therapy, clients treatment goals, activity tolerance, ability to participate in community programs and funding.
Are these treatments covered by OHIP?
No. Private neurophysiotherapy is not listed as an OHIP service. Often private insurance policies will cover physiotherapy services up until a set amount, which differs for each policy. Be sure to check the specific details of your plan. As well self-paying clients are welcomed. Those who have been injured in an accident and are covered by an insurance plan will be funded based upon approval of the insurer.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to be seen by a Physio-Logic therapist?
Doctor’s referrals are not essential as physiotherapists are ‘Regulated Health Professionals’ and are able to accept self –referrals. However, Physio-Logic encourages open communication with their client’s treating physician. In addition, some extended health policies will not fund physiotherapy treatment unless there is a doctor’s referral so be sure to check your policy requirements if you are planning on accessing your extended health plan for funding.
What should I bring to my first visit?
For an initial assessment, it is always helpful to wear loose comfortable clothing that can allow the physiotherapist a clearer observation of physical movement. It is recommended that a client wear shorts and a T-shirt or tank top for optimal analysis and treatment. Any portable therapeutic equipment such as braces, splints or walking aids should also be brought in so that the physiotherapist can assess their impact on movement. It is also helpful to bring any medical records that are related to your reason for referral as well as a list of current medications that you are taking.
Can therapy be provided in my home or do I have to come to the clinic?
While clinic sessions are often encouraged, Physio-Logic offers a community service depending upon individual client needs. Clients must be aware that there is an extra charge for travel time and mileage for community visits.
What kind of equipment will I use at Physio-Logic?
Physio-Logic staff use hands on facilitation and positioning to challenge our clients, which requires minimal use of gym equipment. Our North York clinic has a body weight support treadmill system. If a client requires further training in a gym, physiotherapists will either visit a community gym with the client or set up appropriate supports to make a gym visit possible.
