The Bobath Approach

The Bobath approach is an evolving model in the assessment and treatment of adults with a variety of acquired neurological conditions such as stroke, brain injury, incomplete spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis.  The Bobath approach was developed by Dr. & Mrs. Berta Bobath in the 1950's and has achieved international recognition as one of the foremost approaches to the assessment and treatment of individuals with neurological conditions.
The Bobath approach is primarily a way of observing, analyzing and interpreting movements and through this, improving or restoring everyday activities.  Treatment is tailored to clients' individual needs and is based upon an assessment of their abilities and analysis of their movement. Clients are given the opportunity to experience more efficient and effective movement and to incorporate these different movement strategies into their daily activities. back to top

Multidisciplinary Team Communication

Often, physiotherapy is only one aspect of the rehabilitation process.  Other para-professionals who may be part of your rehabilitation team may include;
 occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, home/therapy support worker, social worker, psychologist, a rehabilitation consultant and other health care specialists.  Physio-Logic staff participate in communication with these other team members which is integral for successful client-centred care.  Staff also regularly participate in team meetings that include sharing updates of long-term goal-achievement and other important issues. back to top

Community Resources

Physio-Logic staff have established a rapport with many community and private fitness centres within and outside the GTA to implement a fitness routine specific to individual needs. Physio-Logic therapists liaise with therapy support workers, and rehabilitation coaches to help those clients requiring assistance or supervision to implement their programs. "We are instrumental in setting up pilates, dryland and pool, strength and endurance training programs". These programs are established in order to enhance clients’ ongoing treatments and maintain gains in the community. back to top

Home and Workplace Assessments

When deemed necessary physiotherapists will conduct home and workplace assessments. Visits may include assessments of safety issues or problem solving around mobility restrictions that are limiting access or function within the home or workplace. Prescription of equipment needs will be identified and possibly to trial within the community environment.  Therapists’ travel costs (including travel time and mileage) will be included in the fees for home or workplace assessments. back to top

Outcome Measures

Outcome measures are standardized assessment tools that are completed with each client.  These measures allow the therapist to demonstrate objective measurable changes that are occurring over the course of treatment.  The measured changes may be as specific as a joint movement or reflected in changes in functional status such as walking speed and distance.  As part of our continuous improvement initiative the physiotherapists at Physio-Logic are often seeking out appropriate measures for their clients and educating each other on the applicability to our clientele. back to top

Body Weight Support Treadmill

Physio-Logic has purchased a ‘Woodway’ Body Weight Support Treadmill (BWST) to augment neurophysiotherapy treatments.  Through the use of a harness and pulley system, the BWST enables clients to access the benefits of gait practice and training with the security of a harness.  Physio-Logic utilizes this piece of equipment to facilitate clinical research and assist in the development of the evidence base for locomotor rehabilitation.  Therapists have documented changes in endurance and walking speed in addition to qualitative improvements in gait pattern.  Screening assessments are carried out on an individual basis to ensure client safety and assess the appropriateness of the BWST as a treatment option. back to top

Seating Assessment and Prescription

Our vision is of a seating system that is progressive, dynamic, and geared towards facilitating stability, alignment, and postural control.  Our ‘Seating Clinic’ is open to those in the community who do not require ongoing treatment and to all patients currently receiving therapy at Physio-Logic. The clinic provides wheelchair and seating assessments, revisions, and prescriptions.  Services may also include collaboration with vendors and technicians, completion of Assistive Devices Program (ADP) applications, documentation for third party payers, and assessment of wheelchairs and seating in the community and workplace as required. back to top

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) or Constraint-Induced Therapy (CIT) is a program of intensive exercise and use of a hemiplegic upper limb. Its goal is to overcome “learned non-use” of the limb and instead takes advantage of use-dependent cortical re-organization in the brain through “forced use” of the limb.  The less-affected (or “good”) arm and hand are restrained so that the individual is “forced” to use the more affected (or “weaker”) arm for all activities during a specified time.  Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy is a treatment approach that has been extensively researched over the past 10 years.  There are different variations of CIMT that have been used in research.  These range from 2 weeks to several months in duration with the constraint in place for times of 2-3 hours up to the full day.  The suitability, duration and intensity of a program for each client will be discussed on an individual basis as there are certain criteria that must be met in order for the program to be effective. back to top
